This Module presents the epidemiology, prevalence, classification systems, and models for female sexual disorders. The historical development of sexual disorders in the DSM and the changes in definitions in the transition from DSM IV-TR to DSM 5, as well as new ISSWSH, endorsed nomenclature are also discussed. Lastly, foundational knowledge on the neurobiology related to female sexual function and dysfunction and its importance to clinical practice is presented.

Hormone Dependent Sexual Dysfunctions in Pre and Postmenopausal Women Including GSM and OCP Use

This learning module recognizes the clinical manifestations of GSM and the underlying pathology and apply evidence-based treatment options, both hormonal and non-hormonal, to the management of GSM and describes the potential positive and negative sexual health effects of various contraceptive methods. How to Take a Sexual History, Screen a Patient, and Utilize Relevant Health Questionnaires

Management of Orgasm Disorders, From Anatomy Through Diagnosis to Treatment

This learning module summarizes the nomenclature, neurophysiology, and principles in the clinical evaluation and management of female orgasmic disorders. The learning objectives are to differentiate among different types of orgasm disorders and describe various aspects of orgasm compromise.

Management of Sexual Pain Disorders; From Anatomy Through Diagnosis to Treatment

This learning module summarizes the epidemiology, anatomy, etiology and associated risk factors and principles in the clinical evaluation and management of sexual pain disorders in women. The learning objectives are to learn the prevalence and the three most common causes of dyspareunia; learn the important components of the physical exam for a woman with dyspareunia; and describe the possible sources of sexual pain and relevant treatment options.

Understanding Hormone Therapy and the Roles of Estrogen, Androgens, and Progestogens

This learning module applies relevant data and appropriate individual choices to the education of both HCPs and patients in order to guide them through the process of menopausal hormone therapy decision-making and analyzes the major differences in available hormone therapies to help individualize the treatment and enhance the benefits while decreasing the risks for the menopausal patient. The module discusses the safety and efficacy of testosterone therapy in women, identifying the benefits and risks associated with off label testosterone use and helps the learner to understand the differences between various progestogens. It is comprised of five video segments, including: Introduction to Understanding Sex Steroid Hormones; Menopausal Estrogen and Hormone Therapy: Understanding the Real Risks and Benefits; Understanding Sex Steroid Hormones: Androgens; Sex Steroids: Understanding progesterone and progestins; Addressing Concerns of the Menopausal Patient – Mock Interview.

Female sexual disorders have historically been treated with multiple non-medical and off-label medical therapies by a limited number of experienced clinicians. Yet, most therapies have insufficient clinical evidence to support their safety and efficacy. Thus, the development of safe and effective therapies for the treatment of sexual disorders in women is critical to improving the overall management of these conditions, and increasing access to care. The International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health (ISSWSH) supports the role of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, and other investigators developing novel therapies for female sexual dysfunction. ISSWSH rejects a “one size fits all” approach to treating female sexual dysfunction due to the multiplicity of biopsychosocial factors that impact sexual health. The concept of personalized medicine, and the availability of multiple therapeutic options are critical in this field.
