Florence, Italy
Florence is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany and the province of Florence. It is the
most populated city in Tuscany. Florence lies on the Arno River and is known for its history and
its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture.
You’ll find history and culture in every corner, tucked among the city’s many piazzas, beautiful
churches and fascinating museums. The spectacular Uffizi Gallery houses the works of such
masters as Titian, Botticelli, Michelangelo and da Vinci. Take a close look at the David of
Michelangelo, the Venere of Botticelli, the Pitti Palace, the Boboli Gardens, and Brunelleschi’s
Dome. Don’t miss the Duomo, the symbol of Florence, or the sunset over the Arno River, and

Convitto della Calza,
Oltrarno Meeting Center
The prestigious conference center, art, culture,
tradition and hotel hospitality, are the distinguishing
features of Convitto della Calza. Located
in the heart of the city, it is unique among
Florence hotels for its combination of 16th Century
cloister and halls frescoed with masterpieces,
such as Francibigio’s Last Supper, and
very modern
meeting rooms
and hospitality,
set in a charming
location.
At the entrance to
Florence, in the characteristic quarter of
Oltrarno, very close to the Boboli Garden, Pitti
Palace and the Ponte Vecchio, the Hotel
Convitto della Calza and Oltrarno Meeting
Center, is located in a truly strategic position
that is easily reached from both the tollway
and the Santa Maria Novella Train Station.
From the Santa Maria Novella Train Station
(which is also the terminal
for the Florence Airport
shuttle) it’s only a few
minutes to the Convitto
della Calza by bus, and
groups arriving in Florence
by motor coach will find
a comfortable area for
loading and unloading
right in front of the hotel.
For those who prefer the bus, the Number 11,
which stops a few meters from the Convitto
della Calza, reaches the Duomo in 10 minutes.
For getting around the old town center of
Florence, there are also the “Bussini” (Line D
stops at the Pitti Palace), the small buses that
circulate in the streets of the old town center
and stop near the most famous historic and
artistic places.
But the real Florence, the one with narrow lanes
that have preserved their fascination intact over
the centuries, is in Oltrarno, the quarter that,
thanks to its position out of the way of tourist
traffic, has remained unchanged. There you will
find the botteghe of the craftsmen, restorers
and antique dealers that, for generations, have
been handing down the secrets and traditions,
from father to son, of the arts of inlaid wood,
ceramics, wrought iron, leather working and
much more.
There are many authentic masterpieces in the
area. The Church of the Santo Spirito, facing
the characteristic piazza by the same name,
the work of Brunelleschi, one of the most beautiful
and important
to the city
and the Renaissance,
the frescoes
of
Masaccio in the
Brancacci
Chapel of the
Church of the
Carmine, are all
within a fifteen minute
walk
from the
Convitto della
Calza. Also not to be missed, is the Deposition
of Pontormo, a masterpiece of Mannerism,
in the Church
of Santa Felicita, very
near the Ponte
Vecchio. At Via
Romana Number 17
(8 minutes on foot
from the Convitto
della Calza) there’s the La Specola Museum,
the ancient Imperial Royal Museum of Physics
and Natural History of Pietro Leopoldo di
Lorena (1775) that houses interesting and curious
collections of natural objects and wax
models.
