ISSWSH Needs and Objectives

Of the many topics being investigated in the field of women's sexual health, understanding how a woman's sexuality progresses through the lifespan is important and germane to both sexual and psychological well-being.  Plenary lectures will also address sexual concerns of women with diabetes, intracrinology and related phenomena in which hormonal therapies alter cellular processes, and how sexual stimuli activate sexual arousal and desire in the brain. Topics in sexuality across the lifespan will include:

1) How concepts of gender and sexuality develop in childhood and adolescence, how sexual arousal and desire are expressed in early sexual functioning, and how sexual response "comes of age" and impacts on psychological functioning in adolescence;

2)  How sexual stimulation and pregnancy alters brain function and morphology in  young adulthood, with data from animals and humans, how behavioral habits can help maintain healthy sexual functioning in relationships, and issues in relationships that lead to a decline in sexual function and sexual self-esteem, and how the use of oral contraceptives can lead to a decline in sexual arousal and desire;

3)  How psychological and physiological factors figure into the maintenance or decline of sexual functioning in aging women, including age-related changes in body image, function, and relationship status;

4)  How menopause alters psychological and physiological factors, and how hormone therapy can reinstate certain normative sexual functions and protect cognitive abilities from decline.

After attending these sessions, participants will be able to:

• Interpret the current state of the art in basic science, epidemiology, physiology and pathophysiology of female sexual function and dysfunction including the role of experiential factors in promoting a women's sexual response

• Distinguish diagnosis and medical treatment of women with different sexual dysfunctions presenting in a community;

• Distinguish diagnosis and surgical treatment of a woman with sexual dysfunction presenting in a community including the role of the hormonal milieu over tactile sensitivity in sexual pain disorders;

• Interpret the results of diagnostic intake questionnaires and determine which are the most effective in aiding diagnosis;

• Distinguish when a referral to a psychologist is required for the woman with sexual dysfunction

• Distinguish when a referral to a sexual medicine physician is required for the woman with sexual dysfunction in particular to assess the role of androgens and other hormones in women and contrast the risks and benefits for using androgens;

• Restate advances in the understanding of diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome in the pathophysiology of women's sexual disorders

• Interpret the importance of hormonal action within cells that regulate sexual function, and understand how sexual stimuli are interpreted in discrete brain regions to alter sexual arousal, desire, and orgasm in women.

About Orlando, Florida

ORLANDO
Orlando is the city of imagination – a place where dreams can come to life. There is plenty to see and do, so you can be sure that your stay will be exciting.

Images of Disney icons, exotic animals and theatrical terrors are all branded in the minds of Orlando visitors. While Orlando’s entertainment scene still surely has some of that playful fantasy, the city’s attractions have grown to include so much more. Many of Orlando’s best entertainment options take place in the city’s temperate outdoor environment. Whether you’d like to unearth your inner child at Orlando’s Walt Disney World, swim with dolphins or wrestle with alligators, or even take a 125-mph spin in a race car, the city’s outdoor excitement is at your fingertips.

For the indoor-inclined, Orlando’s International Drive offers an unparalleled line up of theme parks, celebrity-chef owned restaurants and unique theatrical productions, such as the internationally acclaimed Cirque De Soleil.

If you just want to kick back and relax, Orlando’s warm, sunny days are perfect for lounging outdoors, playing a round or two on one of Orlando’s 168 golf courses, or taking in one of the city’s many tours.

The ISSWSH looks forward to seeing you and your families in Lake Buena Vista, Florida!
